Home Remodeling Planning

Thinking about remodeling your home but not sure where to start? You're not alone. Most homeowners know they're ready for a change but they just don't know what steps to take first.

We put together this checklist to walk you through everything you need to think through before breaking ground. Work through each section, and you'll be in a much stronger position to plan with confidence, stay on budget, and avoid costly surprises.

Want the full version with deeper detail on each step? Download our free Ultimate Home Remodel Checklist PDF here.

1. Create a Wish List

Start by dreaming big, you can always scale back later. It's easier to trim a detailed vision than to build on a vague one.

  • Identify the biggest problem with your existing room or space. What's the number one reason you're remodeling?

  • Ask yourself how you want to use the space — not just now, but five to ten years from now.

  • Write down every feature you'd love to have. Leave no idea unexplored.

  • Once your list is complete, prioritize it into three tiers:

    • Your single must-have for the project

    • Your top three items that would make you happiest at the end

    • The nice-to-haves you could live without if the budget doesn't allow

2. Establish Your Budget

Many homeowners underestimate what their project will cost. Being realistic early saves a lot of frustration later.

  • Identify what's driving your budget. Key factors include: size and scope of the project, materials, appliances, plumbing and electrical work, structural changes, and the age and condition of your home.

  • Get a realistic number in mind before approaching any contractor.

  • Build in a buffer for unexpected costs — estimates are estimates for a reason, and surprises do come up.

3. Find the Right Contractor

Not every contractor is the right fit. Look for someone whose capabilities, communication style, and costs align with your project and personality.

  • Research several local contractors. Review their scope of services, past work, and how they manage projects and timelines.

  • Ask for referrals from trusted friends, neighbors, or family members.

  • Interview multiple contractors. Key questions to ask:

    • Are you licensed and insured?

    • How many similar projects have you completed?

    • How many projects do you manage at once?

    • What is your job site cleanliness policy?

  • Compare bids carefully. Make sure each covers the exact same scope of work. Be cautious of estimates that seem unusually low — they often signal shortcuts in materials or craftsmanship.

4. Create Your Timeline

A remodel takes longer than most homeowners expect. Plan for the full process, not just construction time.

  • Factor in time for hiring, planning, permit acquisition, and material ordering — not just active build time.

  • Understand that high-quality contractors are often booked weeks or months in advance.

  • Align the project timeline with your household schedule and any hard deadlines you may have.

5. Plan for the Logistical Considerations

It’s easy to get caught off guard by day-to-day disruptions during a remodel. So take some time to think through these before work begins:

  • What hours and days will the crew be working in your home?

  • Does your neighborhood have noise restriction windows?

  • How will the project affect your kids' routines or your pets?

  • For large-scale renovations, consider planning time away from home during the most intensive phases of work.

A well-planned remodel is a smoother, more enjoyable one. This post gives you a solid starting point — but the full checklist goes deeper on each step, including what to look for when comparing contractor bids, how to structure your wish list, and what logistical questions most homeowners forget to ask.
